Lesson

Simple, intuitive UX wins over feature count in VR.

The lesson in full: The platform evolved from WebGL/Three.js to Unity, adding 8K playback and non-linear storytelling while keeping UX minimal.

What it is

At Stargate Media, I owned the VR video player development. Starting in 2015 with WebGL/Three.js and native Android (NDK), the codebase evolved to Unity with advanced features: 8K video playback on PC and non-linear storytelling (checkpoints for branching storylines or training). The UX principle throughout was to keep everything simple and intuitive.

Results

  • 8K video support.
  • Non-linear storytelling.
